FAQs

WHERE IS TONIC?

We are based in offices in Soho in Central London. We do not yet have any retirement communities established but we are in discussions on a number of opportunities in London. We will share information about these when they are secured.

WHY DOES LONDON NEED A RETIREMENT COMMUNITY FOR LGBT+ PEOPLE?

Many people have told us that this is what they want - a place where it is safe and celebrated to be yourself in later life. It might not be for everyone, but for some people it is really important to have this choice available.

We know that ‘being connected to others is fundamental to a happy later life’ and in retirement, when we no longer have this connection through work, it becomes particularly important to belong to a community especially when family support is not there.

Retirement Communities combine high quality housing for older people with community spaces and tailored support services. They allow residents to rent or own a property and to maintain their privacy and independence, with the reassurance of 24-hour on-site staff and optional care and support as needed. Tonic puts LGBT+ affirmation into the heart of retirement communities - understanding, celebrating and respecting residents.

WHY IS TONIC FOCUSED ON URBAN LIVING?

The largest populations of LGBT+ people live in our urban cities. Many people moved to the cities to be part of the LGBT+ community and find safety in numbers. Many people have told us that they want to continue living in those cities as they grow older, with access to all the cultural facilities they love and to continue to feel safe in a cosmopolitan environment.

WHEN WILL A TONIC SCHEME BE OPEN?

We are working hard to get our first project up and running as soon as possible, but the timescale depends on the opportunities that we are able to secure.

Developing new homes in areas where land costs are very high is extremely difficult, especially for a new company with no asset base. This is why we have now focused our efforts on creating our retirement communities through working in partnership with other housing and care providers and developers.

With that said, sign up on our register of interest or check back on the blog regularly for updates - you never know it could be sooner than you think.

DO I HAVE TO IDENTIFY AS LGBT+ TO LIVE AT A TONIC PROJECT?

No - Tonic will be LGBT+ affirming which means that our primary objective is to meet the needs of older LGBT+ people but not every resident has to identify as LGBT+ to live in the community.  Tonic has a strong values based approach to support our LGBT+ affirming approach. If you are over 55 and want to be a part of an LGBT+ affirming retirement community then you are welcome to register your interest.

I KNOW IT’S NOT BUILT YET BUT IS THERE A LIST I COULD SIGN UP TO?

There is! You can register your interest and we’ll reach out with any updates and may ask for your input into the process as we shape Tonic.

ARE YOU PLANNING TO CREATE RETIREMENT COMMUNITIES OUTSIDE OF LONDON?

Our main focus is on London, although we are connecting with projects in other UK with our consultancy work. We are open to discuss any appropriate urban development and partnership opportunities -  please contact us if you are interested.

If you have a question that we have not answered here please contact us - as well as getting back to you, we may add the question and answer to this list. Thank you.
